As we age, it is increasingly important to stay active and exercise regularly. At the Y, older adults can take advantage of exercise programs designed especially for them and benefit from social events ranging from holiday parties to group outings and community service opportunities.
The Fond du Lac Family YMCA is proud to participate in the Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program, the nation’s leading exercise program for older adults. More than just a gym membership, SilverSneakers® participants are offered specialized exercise classes, health education and social programs that have been shown to help older adults maintain good health, reduce health care costs and lead an active, independent lifestyle.
SilverSneakers® is a preventative exercise program that enhances the quality of life for mature adults across the country. One of the largest senior-focused exercise programs in the United States, this partnership between HCD and HMOs allows Medicare-eligible members of these health plans to participate in YMCA programs at no additional cost. SilverSneakers® members at the Y receive the same membership benefits as our regular Y members.
Regular participation in SilverSneakers® can help you build muscular strength, improve joint mobility and increase cardiovascular endurance, leading to improved health and greater independence.
SilverSneakers® also provides opportunities to:
- Expand your social network and strengthen friendships
- Increase your mental sharpness
- Take part in social activities and wellness seminars
